Etchings by Victor Guzeniouk, master from Saint-Petersburg (Russia)

published in: 3.2007, 210×148 mm, 16 pages, edition: 1000 items

Today, at the beginning of XXI century, when everything seems to have been tested — all techniques, all approaches, all conceptions; when every mask seems to have been tried on — from surprised and naive (I see that this way!) to extremely experienced one (now I’ll show you!), it’s strange to see this artist’s engravings, populated with satyrs, centaurs and other whimsical fruits of ancient people’s fantasy, living amidst absolutely real stones and trees, waves and clouds! An insensitive viewer could blame the artist with «bias to classics» or «stilization»; but sensitive one, undoubtedly, would sense powerful and almost suprematic rhythm in this «classics». He would distinguish sincerity and simplicity incompatible with stilization, which tends to dress up in stranger’s clothes just for the sake of disguising. In this artist’s obvious unwillingness to follow any fancy trends, in his permanent and persistent return to the source of all Wonderful — to the Nature — we can hear that «Ich kann nicht anders!» of one of his personages, which separates those who «can» from those who «cannot» or rather doesn’t want to follow any fancy trends!
